Making the Most Out Of Your Wedding Show Investment: Capital Wedding Show 2020 Recap
One of the things Julia and I love doing is getting out of the office. Whether it be a quick Starbucks run or a full day out on the town, we’re always pumped to go explore and do something out of the ordinary. So when Julia mentioned that we should go to some wedding shows, I was totally on board! As it would happen, the Capital Wedding Show was just a week and a bit away, so we bought our tickets and counted down the days.
It was actually the first trade show I went to as an attendee. I’ve exhibited multiple times before, but I didn’t realize how overwhelming it would be going as an attendee myself! I was so glad to have Julia there with me and my boyfriend Mik there too as our photographer (although everyone asked when we were getting married ourselves!) to spread out to cover more ground. It was so interesting to see all the different booths and the vendors’ tactics for giving information and hopefully getting more clients. Julia and I came away from the day with so many tips for the vendors we spoke to (and didn’t speak to), and we’d love to share them with you. Here are my top 4 tips (although there are 7 more if you sign up for emails from us down at the bottom of the page!)
Tip #1: Make it clear
Our favourite booths, and the ones we spent the most time talking to, were the ones where we knew right away what the vendor did. Most wedding show attendees are brides and their entourages who are coming looking for one or two vendors to round out their list for their big day. If they’re looking specifically for a florist, then make it clear what you do so they don’t pass your booth by! If you’re a product-based or tangible business, this could be as easy as laying out some of your best work (although it never hurts to have a sign or two!). Same thing goes for treats – a small “take me!” sign beside cake samples or mini cupcakes with a bit of information about what people are enjoying does wonders for bringing people to your booth so you have a chance to talk to them. Even if you’re a service-based business and don’t have anything physical to show off, leaving business cards and pamphlets out in the open can help make it clear to passersby what you’re all about.
Tip #2: Bring the crew
From experience manning a tradeshow booth, I know how exhausting the day gets. There were so many vendors we saw who were on their own for the weekend. Think of how many more people you could be talking to if you enlisted a friend to come with you to help you man the booth. Even if they’re just there handing out flyers and covering you for when you need to run for coffee, having someone there means that you’re not wasting the investment in your booth. Especially towards the end of the day, we saw quite a few empty booths all around the same time.
Tip #3: Be photo-ready
The most memorable booths to Julia and I were the ones where we could take a photo. Even if there wasn’t much else to the booth itself, we were more likely to stop for a while and chat if there was something we could do or take a photo with. A fancy and aesthetic chair could cost the same as getting banners printed, but the experience is so much better. A great example of this is Plenty of Pretty, whose booth we stopped at for a good long time. Plenty of Pretty does faux floral artistry, so Sandra put together a gorgeous greenery and flower wall with her logo and a chair in front of it. It was so Instagrammable and we could NOT stop gushing over how gorgeous everything looked. Compared to just having samples on a table, her booth really made a memorable impact.
Tip #4: No ring pops
This is mostly a running joke. For the past year, my boyfriend has been teasing me with his upcoming proposal. His go-to has been that he’s actually going to propose in a candy store with a ring pop. At the show, one of the booths had ring pops so he snuck one home and fake-proposed later. I was honestly laughing and crying at the same time. I’m probably not the only one whose boyfriend has said something similar. Candy and snacks are ok, but I would stay away from the ring pops!
